Moss along the laps of a plain tile roof, as found

Roof moss removal from Fully Covered, roofing and building specialists: the moss and growth scraped off your roof, so roof cleaning and moss removal come from people who fix roofs. Cody runs it, with a team behind him, and the people on your roof are roofers. Ring Cody, or for a straight answer send a photo of the roof on WhatsApp.

The thicker the moss grows, the more water it holds against the roof through the winter. One picture from the pavement shows how far it has got.

Where moss takes hold

Moss needs two things, shade and water, and a pitched roof offers both in places. It starts small, in the laps, which are the bottom edges of the tiles where one course overlaps the next. Water lingers there after rain and grit settles in the gap, and that is enough for moss to root. From the laps it spreads across the face of the tiles in cushions, thickest on the slope that gets the least sun, under an overhanging tree, and in the shadow a chimney or a taller wall throws across the roof for most of the day. A rough, porous surface holds water longer than a smooth one, which is why moss tends to take to concrete and clay tiles more readily than to slate. The photograph at the top of this page is a plain tile roof as it was found: moss along the laps, heavier where the shadow falls, and halfway up the slope a gap in a course where a tile has slipped. That is the usual pattern. A roof does not go green all at once. It goes green from the bottom edge of every tile, one course at a time, on whichever side stays wet the longest.

What moss does to a roof

Moss in the laps holds the overlap open and keeps it wet, which gives wind-driven rain a way up and under the tile above. Clumps that break away roll down the slope into the gutter, and a gutter packed with moss overflows onto the fascia board behind it. That is how moss on the tiles turns into a rotten board at the eaves, a job of its own on the fascias, soffits and guttering page. Moss hides things, too. From the ground, a cracked tile under a green cushion looks like every other tile on the roof.

Taking it off

Fully Covered takes moss off a roof by scraping it, and the people doing the scraping are roofers. With the moss gone the tiles can be seen again, and if one turns out to be cracked or slipped, putting it right is a roof repair, done by the same firm.

Moss removal, step by step

  1. A photo from the ground

A photo of the moss taken from the garden or the pavement shows which slopes have it and how thick it has grown. The form above takes one, and so does WhatsApp.

  2. Scraped off

The moss is scraped off the tiles until the roof shows through again.

  3. The tiles underneath

Moss is thickest where a roof stays wettest, and that is where frost is most likely to have cracked a tile. Any that have are a repair, and you are told straight.

Moss removal questions

Is moss bad for a roof?

Over enough winters, yes. It keeps the laps of the tiles wet, it can lift a tile's bottom edge, and it washes into the gutters in clumps.

Why is the moss only on one side?

Moss grows where the roof stays damp. The slope that faces away from the sun dries last after rain, so that is where it gets going first.

Can I scrape it off myself?

A roof with moss on it is slippery underfoot and a long way to fall. It is work for roofers, with the right access.

What does moss removal cost?

That depends on the size of the roof and how far the moss has spread. Fill in the form above and add a photo, and Cody will tell you where you stand.
