What happens next
The roofline
The roofline is the run of boards and gutter along the bottom edge of your roof. The fascia is the board fixed across the ends of the rafters: it closes them off, and the gutter hangs on it. The soffit is the board underneath, running back from the fascia to the wall, closing the gap where birds and weather would otherwise get into the roof. The guttering takes the water that runs off the tiles and carries it to the downpipes. Of the three, the gutter is the one that tells you something is wrong. It drips at a joint, it sags between its brackets, or it overflows in heavy rain and runs down the wall. Timber fascias and soffits fail more quietly. The paint flakes, water gets into the grain, and the board goes soft from the bottom edge up, usually behind a gutter that has been overflowing onto it for years. By the time it shows from the ground, a screwdriver goes into it. And a gutter is only as good as the board it is screwed to, so a rotten fascia is rarely only a fascia.
Replacing it
When the fascias are replaced the gutter comes down first, because it hangs on them. With the old boards off, the ends of the rafters behind can be seen. A new gutter is hung to a slight fall towards the downpipe, so the water runs out instead of sitting in it.
Sometimes it is only the guttering that has had it and the boards behind are sound. Sometimes it is all three. Send a photo of yours on WhatsApp and you will be told which.
A roofline job, start to finish
A photo of the eaves
One photo of the gutter and the boards behind it, taken from the ground, shows the gutter, the fascia and the soffit in a single frame.
Gutter down, boards checked
The old gutter comes off first, because it hangs on the fascia. With it down, the boards and the rafter ends behind them can be seen.
New guttering up
Fascias and soffits that need it are replaced, then the new guttering goes up on its brackets with a fall to the downpipe.
Fascia and guttering questions
Can you replace just the guttering?
Yes. If the boards behind it are sound, only the guttering needs to go, and a photo usually shows which it is.
How do I know if my fascia is rotten?
Flaking paint, a soft bottom edge and a gutter that sags between its brackets are the signs. A screwdriver goes into rotten timber easily.
Why does my gutter overflow?
A gutter blocked with moss or leaves, one that has lost its fall, or a downpipe that cannot keep up in heavy rain. The overflow onto the fascia is what rots it.
What do new fascias and guttering cost?
That turns on the length of the run and how much of it needs replacing. Send the form above with a photo of the gutter and Cody will tell you where you stand.
